Chris Paul

Paul Requests a Trade to the Knicks

According to Yahoo Sports:

Chris Paul’s(notes) agent informed New Orleans officials on Wednesday that his client will not sign a contract extension and wants to be traded to the New York Knicks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

As soon as the NBA lifts its lockout restrictions, Hornets general manager Dell Demps wants to meet with Paul and hear that directive from him.

Nevertheless, the prospects of the Hornets executing a trade with the Knicks appear to be relatively dim. The Knicks simply don’t have the trade assets that come close to meeting New Orleans’ criteria for a deal. Demps has been listening to overtures from teams around the league, and has been actively working under the assumption that Paul would reject a contract extension.

Simply put, this could get ugly. He wants to be in NY, the Knicks want him, but the Knicks have no pieces to trade. Unlike the Anthony deal, in which guitar Jim overrode Donnie and gave up 5 starters and 4 draft picks, the Knicks have nothing on the roster that New Orleans (or any other team in the league) would want in return for a superstar like Paul. If this trade is going to happen, I think it will happen at the 11th hour. I do not expect a deal to get done before the season starts. If the Knicks were smart they would contact Paul behind the back of New Orleans and tell him to play hard ball. If the Knicks want to make this a great trade, they need to give up as little as possible. Paul and the Knicks have all the leverage here. New Orleans has very little leverage. New Orleans could have some great offers out there for Paul but no other team will agree to a deal unless Paul signs an extension. If he really wants to be a Knick, he needs to keep his mouth shut (unlike Melo who publicly said he wanted a max deal) and hold his ground about becoming a Knick. The only way this trade happens is if New Orleans gets desperate to make a deal and they accept a lesser trade from the Knicks.

Broussard on Paul: “This is Not About Money”

ESPN’s Chris Broussard gave an interview on ESPN New York’s Rucco and Lundberg today and he discussed the possibility of Chris Paul coming to New York. In the interview he said he believes that Paul would come to New York for less money which is music to a lot of Knick fans ears. He also said he thinks the Hornets would trade him to New York if there was something to trade for (thanks Melo) and he gave his opinion on a potential Amar’e-Dwight Howard trade.

Here is the interview

Celtics Also In the Hunt for Chris Paul

According to multiple sources, the Celtics have offered Rajon Rondo in a trade for Hornets guard Chris Paul.

The Celtics have been discussing trading Rajon Rondo for Chris Paul, according to sources. But the Hornets don’t appear interested in a two-team deal.

Danny Ainge has been searching for a third team that would give the Hornets young pieces that would help Dell Demps in his rebuilding plan.

It is also unclear whether Paul would agree to an extension, something Ainge would need to execute a trade.

Paul has the power in this deal because, like Carmelo Anthony last season, he will be a free agent at the end of the season and any team trading for Paul will want him to sign an extension prior to the trade. However, Moke Hamilton had an interesting tweet on the subject:

It has been widely accepted in Knick nation that Paul will be playing alongside Melo and STAT but I warn Knick fans to beware of other teams. Paul is a superstar and other teams have more cap space and trade assets. He wants to play in New York yes but it makes more financial sense for him to maybe play elsewhere. It will be interesting to see what happens but right now there is absolutely no guarantee that Paul will be a Knick in 2012.

Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony Appear at “Watch the Throne” Concert

Last night, Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and Hornets point guard Chris Paul made an appearance together at the “Watch the Throne” tour at Madison Square Garden. It has been no secret that Anthony and Paul have become closer during this lockout. The stars have been in lockout negotiation meetings together, they have played in numerous charity games together and they have gone on a Jordan brand tour in China together. Just last month, Anthony publicly said he would love to play with Paul. Personally, I think this is a good thing that the two are hanging out and going to concerts. Obviously this has no impact on basketball or anything but I think the more Melo and Paul continue to build a good relationship with each other, the more likely it is that the impending free agent Paul will bring his talents to Madison Square Garden in 2012. Lockout pending of course…

Carmelo Anthony Wants Chris Paul on the Knicks… Duh

On Thursday, Knicks star Carmelo Anthony said what everybody knew; that he would love to have Hornets guard Chris Paul in a Knick uniform.

“If it works out and he comes here and they allow him to come here, you’ll see a smile from ear to ear,” Anthony said, according to the New York Post. “It’s not just me. It’s everybody [in New York]. If he decides to leave New Orleans and goes somewhere else, they’ll be feeling the same way I’m feeling.”

Isn’t this why we are having the lockout? Cause owners do not want players recruiting each other and joining up in big markets? I love Melo as much as the next fan but this is not the time for him to be saying things like this. Also I do not really see the reason for saying this. Everybody knows that he would like to join up with Chris Paul. Everyone knows about the infamous Melo-LaLa wedding where Paul made a toast to a big three in New York (along with Amar’e Stoudemire).

Obviously I would love to see a big three with Paul also. Whether or not it would be best for the team would have to be decided by the roster and pieces around them but either way it would be entertaining and the team would have a great chance to be great. I really do not get why Melo said this at this time, probably the worst possible time to make comments like this, and I do not think it is necessary to say that in public. Everyone knows that, why say it? Telling it to a New York paper is not going to make it happen or heighten the chances of it happening so why say it? I love Melo but I think it would be just best if he keeps this Chris Paul stuff on the DL. You know, since there is a lockout going on where the fight is about superstars changing teams it is probably best to just not say the free agent stuff. Just saying…

What is Isiah Thomas up to?

Over the past couple weeks, numerous reports have surfaced about former Knick coach and president of basketball operations Isiah Thomas being related in potential New York Knick related activities. There have been reports that he has been trying to help recruit Hornets free agent to be Chris Paul to New York as well as reports that he has been working out Amare Stoudemire at FIU. So what really is going on here?

Thomas is absolutely involved with the Knicks. His love affair with Knicks owner James Dolan has not stopped since Thomas was forced out by the NBA. Dolan tried to get Thomas on as a consultant but that was rejected by the league because Thomas is currently the head coach at FIU. The same FIU where Amar’e Stoudemire has been working out this offseason. The same FIU that is hosting a street game next month in which Stoudemire, Melo and Chris Paul are all participating in (Thomas favorite Eddy Curry is also expected to play in that game).

These are not coincidences, Isiah “Zeke” Thomas is absolutely involved with the New York Knicks. This should not come as a surprise to Knick fans because he never left! He has been in Dolan’s ear throughout this entire “post-Isiah” period. Thomas helped recruit Melo and Amar’e to New York and he was advising Dolan throughout the Melo trade. Hell, it was probably Isiah’s idea to throw in 4 starters and a plethora of draft picks. Maybe we give Dolan too much credit for undercutting Donnie Walsh’s negotiations, it was probably Isiah! After all he never did know how to manage a team. We only had a 130 million dollar payroll when he was here. He is a god awful executive mind. Did we have some talent? Sure but every team has some talent, we had a few talented players but the team was an absolute joke. Between his point guard Stephon Marbury and his retarded antics, his center Eddy Curry weighing 400 pounds, the Renaldo Balkman pick, his drug overdose, and his sex scandal that cost the Knicks 11.6 million, Isiah Thomas single handedly destroyed his reputation and the reputation of the Knicks in terms of on-court success and off-court class. Any logical human being with half a brain would ban this guy for being within 500 feet of any member the Knicks organization and 10,000 feet away from Madison Square Garden. But James Dolan is no logical human being, he is an absolute moron. Not only did his highly publicized friendship with Thomas continue but it continued to flourish. After Thomas was released by Donnie Walsh, Dolan tried to bring him back as a consultant. Behind the scenes with no official team role, Thomas was brought in to help recruit Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. Now Thomas is helping to recruit Chris Paul to the Knicks.

This is all part of Thomas’ master plan to return to Madison Square Garden in 2012. By recruiting the 3 superstars to the Knicks, Thomas hopes to re-ingratiate himself to the fans of New York. Then, once the contract of Mike D’Antoni has expired after next season, Thomas will swoop in and return to the perch that he believes should still be his. To be honest, this is probably the smartest thing that he has ever thought of. Obviously most fans will still dislike him, but I believe if Chris Paul is a Knick in 2012 many fans will forgive Thomas for his 5 years of mismanagement, losing and off-court problems.

Overall, this entire plan is scary as hell. The Knicks are on the path to success and grabbing Isiah Thomas will absolutely kick the Knicks right into the bushes. He was never a good coach, he has no place in any NBA organization and the only person blind enough to see that is Dolan. Hopefully, my assumptions are incorrect but I have a bad feeling that I am correct and we will see the man they call “Zeke” return to the garden in 2012.

Melo joins CP3, Wade in a Dance Off During Jordan Tour

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kwpPBJ3rq8&feature=player_embedded]

Video has arisen of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwayne Wade doing a dance off with some chinese children during their Jordan tour in China. I like seeing things like this in where professional athletes are giving back to some children. Granted these aren’t American children but still, I like to see stars giving back.

Should Knicks Ditch 3 Star Plan?

Photobucket

Today, Marc Berman of the NY Post wrote an article about how Dallas has shown that the Knicks should change their 3 star plan. The 3 stars being Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and hypothetically, now New Orleans point guard, Chris Paul. I’m not sure that Miami’s collapse suggests that the Knicks need to scratch the 3 star plan because I think the 2 situations are completely different. Having a big 3 with a Chris Paul versus Chris Bosh is completely different. One of the great positives of Chris Paul is that he makes everybody better on offense and he’s a great defender. Bosh adds a 3rd scorer to LeBron and Wade but he doesn’t pass to make people better and he’s not a great defender (see Dirk at the end of game 2 of the finals). Depending on the new CBA the Knicks may be able to afford Paul or they may not be able to. Depending on the new salary cap figure / whether or not it is a hard cap, the Knicks could be able to get Paul cheaper and maybe add a decent piece or two. Miami did well in that they had the big 3 signed to less then max deals and they were able to sign Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller. Amare and Carmelo are both signed on max deals and the NBA doesn’t allow, or doesn’t allow under this CBA, the ability to take a pay cut while in contract. I am a big proponent of team depth. We have enough firepower with Amare and Carmelo and I would not be opposed to bypassing CP3 and signing a veteran point, a center and some bench pieces. Right now, with all the CBA uncertainty, I think it’s a bit of a waste to discuss this. While it is interesting to discuss, nobody knows what the terms of the next CBA are. Depending on the cap number, CP3 may not even be a possibility and then the 3 star plan will have to be scratched. I think there are pros and cons to both plans but this cannot be seriously discussed until we know the terms of the next CBA.
