Iman Shumpert Impact League Highlights

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuDyJF9oiMk&feature=share]

Knicks rookie Iman Shumpert has been working hard all offseason and has looked great at the Vegas Impact League. Here are some highlights along with some other NBA players. Shumpert shows off his athleticism and dunking ability as well as delivering a nice ally oop on one play. Shumpert seems like he will be a great player on the Knicks when/if the NBA season gets started. Enjoy

Racy Pictures of Lala Vazquez Surface

Last week at the Goodman vs. Melo league, Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony had 2 cell phones stolen. Now racy photos of his wife, entertainer Lala Vazquez, have surfaced on the internet. This really is not a big deal but what they do in their own time is their business only. It is a big deal that somebody who went to a show that Melo put on (the Melo-Goodman game) stole his phones and exposed his wife online. I think it is absolutely absurd and I hope they find the person or persons that did this. The pictures do not reveal her naked or anything and she has done some modeling in the past so these pictures are not the end of the world but they were meant for Melo only and it is sad that they have now hit the internet. Again, this is not the biggest deal in the world but it is disappointing that somebody would do this.

The pictures can be seen here.

Roger Mason Slips Up on Twitter

After todays meeting between the NBA and NBA Players Association, the Knicks Roger Mason Jr, VP of the NBAPA, released an interesting tweet…

I think he clearly was trying to send a direct message to somebody and accidentally just tweeted it. I think this is a great sign though. After they met for 5 1/2 hours today, the two sides agreed to meet on Thursday as well. I think the fact that they are meeting at all is a great sign. Whether any progress has been made yet is unknown but it is great to see the two sides meeting. The season is approaching and the two sides need to get a deal done. I am actually surprised they are meeting as much as they are at this point. I thought they would wait till the 11th hour but they are getting some 10th hour negotiating done. In just a few days, I have gone from feeling very pessimistic about this lockout to being very optimistic.

Melo joins CP3, Wade in a Dance Off During Jordan Tour

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kwpPBJ3rq8&feature=player_embedded]

Video has arisen of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwayne Wade doing a dance off with some chinese children during their Jordan tour in China. I like seeing things like this in where professional athletes are giving back to some children. Granted these aren’t American children but still, I like to see stars giving back.

Watch Renaldo Balkman Get Tossed From FIBA America Game

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lStJBsUKcl8&feature=player_embedded]

… Oh Renaldo. During Monday’s FIBA America game between Puerto Rico and Venezuela, Renaldo Balkman of the Knicks got into it with Memphis’ Grevis Vazquez. Balkman’s Puerto Rico team was winning the game 85-62 when Vazquez gave Balkman a hard foul. Balkman then retaliated by attempting a Zinedine Zidane headbutt but was promptly tossed to the floor. Puerto Rico, battling for an Olympic spot won the game easily 94-82.

Amar’e Stoudemire Does Cameo On Entourage

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jMrrl3v48o&feature=player_embedded]

Amar’e Stoudemire continues to take advantage of the opportunities that New York provides him. Sunday night he appeared on HBO’s Entourage along with Mark Teixeira, Michael Strahan and Alex Rodriguez. In the episode, Turtle (played by Jerry Ferrara) is trying to round up more money from New York superstar athletes to bring Don Pepe’s clams out to California.

Warning: The clip does use bad language so please do not be offended by that, I am only posting the clip.

Stoudemire Planning Off-Season Workouts

Last week at the Melo league versus Goodman league showdown, Carmelo Anthony provided us with an interesting quotation after the game:

““I’m trying to find Amar’e, man,” Anthony said, laughing. “If anybody’s seen Amar’e, just tell him. I don’t know where he’s at . . . I heard he’s in China, I heard he’s back. Maybe I’ll see him in New York next week for Fashion Week.”

Many Knick followers, myself included, cringed when he made these comments because the two cornerstones of the franchise need to be on the same page. Newsday has reported that Anthony was in fact joking and that the two Knick superstars have been in contact all off-season and that Stoudemire has in fact began to organize Knick workouts next month. According to un-named Knick players, Stoudemire has emailed all 10 Knicks under contract, a few free agents from last years team and both rookie draft picks about working out at the IMG basketball facility in Florida. Iman Shumpert, the teams first round selection has been working out at IMG all off-season. The workouts will take place from Oct. 19 – Nov. 3. Jerome Jordan likely will not be in attendance due to his contract with Slovenia and Ronny Turiaf has a broken finger so his status is unknown.

This is very refreshing to hear because I was very worried when Melo made those comments. The Knicks right now seem healthy enough to do a camp like this at full speed. Melo looked thinner and more muscular last week at the Melo league game and seems to be 100% healthy after that elbow injury and Billups has been cleared to play basketball again. Stoudemire has had issues with his back but he has been cleared to play basketball as well and was healthy enough to win a 3 point shooting contest in China last month. Overall, it is great to hear that the two stars have been in contact and hopefully this camp will carry over into better chemistry when the regular season begins.

Melo League Defeats Goodman League 149-141

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5GntGLvL2U]

On the eve of the second meeting by the NBA and NBAPA to discuss the lockout, the Melo League All Stars led by Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and LeBron James defeated the Kevin Durant led Goodman League team 149-141 at Morgan State University. Durant had a game high 59 points while LeBron had 38 and Carmelo had 27. Other notable players in this game included: Josh Selby, Gary Neal, DeMarcus Cousins, Brandon Jennings, Donte Greene and Hugh Jones.

I believe these pro-am leagues are great for basketball right now. The attendance for these games is fantastic and I think these games are great because they give fans the chance to see players that they may not be able to see during the NBA season. NBA tickets are not cheap, especially at Madison Square Garden (thanks Dolan) so Melo playing for free in Baltimore, where he grew up, gives those fans a chance to see an NBA star that they could not regularly see.

Knicks Officially Hire Mike Woodson

Finally the Knicks have hired a defensive assistant to coach along side Mike D’Antoni. Today the Knicks announced the hiring of former Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Woodson as the defensive assistant coach. Woodson was Larry Brown’s top assistant when the Pistons won the championship in 2004. He was actually drafted in the first round by the Knicks in 1980 so he has some familiarity with the franchise. Woodson is said to be a strong defensive mind learning from Larry Brown in Detroit and Bobby Knight when he played college ball at Indiana.

There are also rumors being stirred up by the east coast media that Woodson, who has strong ties to Isiah Thomas, will take over the head coaching job should things go south next season. I completely disagree. If the Knicks struggle next season or get swept in the playoffs again and Mike D’Antoni is fired, I believe the Knicks will bring in a marquee name a la Phil Jackson not a guy like Mike Woodson. Mike Woodson is a great guy but I do not believe he would be the big name splash the Knicks would be looking bring in. Regardless, I think this is an excellent hire and it will be interesting to see how Woodson can change the defensive culture around the Knicks.
